Soccer Update

Dear SWYSC Members,

SWYSC is closely monitoring the situation related to COVID-19, including the guidance provided by WA State government and discussions taking place around resuming in-person instruction and extracurricular activities in the South Whidbey schools. Here is a quick summary of factors influencing SWYSC right now:

    • Right now, Island County is still in Phase 1 in the Healthy Washington—Roadmap to Recovery guidance from state health officials. In Phase 1, we can hold practice but not games.
    • If Island County (along with the rest of region 1—San Juan, Whatcom, and Skagit counties) can enter Phase 2, that would open the possibility of holding games.
    • For younger soccer players (U6-U12), we will be closely reviewing the approach taken by the schools in the coming weeks and will be involved in discussions with our partner clubs in Oak Harbor and Coupeville. We will send more information once we have a better idea about when and how we can start to register players and safely resume holding practices and games. Our hope is that a spring season of some sort should be possible.
    • For older players, we also are anxious to get them back out on the pitch as we have received feedback that practices have improved the mental and physical health of these players:
      • A priority is supporting high school age players in whatever way we can as the possibility of resuming their high school seasons gets closer. This  could come in the form of holding select team practices. We also want to support any other teams that want to hold practices but getting the high school players ready is our top priority.
      • One challenge is that the fields we most often use, the SW Parks and Rec fields at Langley Rd, are very wet, so we are working with Parks and Rec to see when we can safely start up practices again and not damage the fields. The school district has told us their fields are not  available for use at this time.
  •

Please stay tuned to your email for more information as events are fluid right now. Though 2021 is off to something of a rocky and challenging start (we hope your power is back on!), we are optimistic about 2021 and look forward to getting the players back out on the pitch!

Thank you,

SWYSC Board
